The Indian rupee slid for the fourth straight session and ended 11 paise down at 74.58 against the U.S. currency today amid fears that a surge in Covid-19 cases in the country can disrupt economic recovery.
The Indian rupee opened at 74.38 against the dollar and quoted in the range of 74.19 to 74.93 during the day. The currency ended at 74.58 against the dollar, booking a fall of 11 paise over its previous closing of 74.47.
The Indian rupee fell 105 paise to mark its biggest single-session fall in over 20 months.
India registered a record single-day spike of 1,26,789 new Covid-19 cases, pushing its infection tally to 1,29,28,574, while the number of active cases too went upwards to breach the nine lakh-mark again, Union Health Ministry data updated today showed.
This is the fourth straight session of loss for the domestic unit, during which it has seen depreciation of 146 paise.
